CONTACT ROY

So says the “Old Curmudgeon,” Roy Hotchkiss, and though it’s no way to run a historical society, Roy offers his own take on history and current events. In the process, he tells a lot of good stories in his monthly column for the Price Hill Historical Society on the west side of Cincinnati, Ohio, and on his new Old Curmudgeon blog, too.

Roy is a prolific writer, and he particularly likes to write about his native Price Hill. A collection of his “Old Curmudgeon” columns that includes almost ten years of very assorted musings is available from the Price Hill Historical Society and Edgecliff Press, and he has written a fictional history of the founding of Cincinnati as well as several comic mysteries set in Price Hill during the 1940s to follow. Roy's Books

Roy’s new book is a mystery novel set in the 1940s, during World War II, and the plot involves Nazi spies, suspicious priests, malingering mailmen, and an entire cult of followers of the cowboy star Tom Mix. The action centers around the Ideal Cafe in Price Hill, near Prout’s Corner, and the protagonist is a mild-mannered insurance salesman who finds himself suddenly working as a private detective. The cast of characters includes many of the denizens of the Ideal Cafe, a fictionalized version of the bar that Roy’s father operated for forty years in Price Hill.
